About Cardross Estate
Cardross Estate offers scenic riverbank fly-fishing along the River Forth, set within 4,500 acres of parkland, woodland, and farmland near the Lake of Menteith. Anglers can enjoy peaceful surroundings and stunning views across the Trossachs, with salmon and trout fishing available on a catch-and-release basis to support healthy fish stocks. Permits for fishing on the estate are sold via the Fish Around the Forth platform, making access easy for visitors. The estate also provides self-catering accommodation and glamping options, offering an ideal base for a relaxing fishing retreat in central Scotland.
Location
Cardross Estate is located near the village of Port of Menteith in Stirlingshire, just south of the Lake of Menteith and within easy reach of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. Nearby landmarks include Inchmahome Priory, Flanders Moss, and the town of Aberfoyle, with views stretching towards Ben Lomond and the Campsie Fells.
Boundaries
This stretch covers roughly five miles along the left bank when looking downstream, beginning near Flanders Moss and continuing to just below Cardross House.
The Fishing
The River Forth at Cardross Estate meanders gently across the flat expanse of the Carse, creating a slow-moving and scenic stretch of water ideal for a peaceful day’s fishing. The river here forms a series of pools and glides interspersed with shallow runs, offering varied habitat for salmon and trout. While some locations can be carefully waded, much of the fishing is best done from the bank due to the soft substrate and occasional deep margins. The slower flow and sweeping bends make for productive fishing, particularly in the early morning and evening. The surrounding land is largely open farmland, with the riparian zone remaining largely unmanaged, giving the river a natural and wild character. Tall grasses, willows, and brambles line much of the bank, providing good cover for fish and adding to the sense of seclusion. It’s a tranquil stretch of river ideal for anglers looking to enjoy quiet sport in a rural setting.
Facilities
Picnic area and outdoor fireplace provided with glamping pods. The Woodhouse Coffee Shop and Smiddy Farm Shop nearby for meals and local produce. Nick Nairn’s Pop-Up Pizza and a restaurant at Lake of Menteith within 2–3 miles. On-site electric vehicle charging and free self-parking. Stirling city centre, 20-minute drive, offers shops, cafés, and other amenities.
Accomodation
Cardross Estate offers a charming mix of accommodation options perfectly suited to both cosy retreats and family getaways. Their stylish self-catering cottages are nestled within the scenic parkland, each boasting a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable living spaces, and a private deck that looks out over rolling fields and woodland. Ideal for those seeking a traditional stay with all the conveniences of home, these cottages cater well to longer stays and group visits.
For a more adventurous and intimate escape, the estate’s glamping pods provide a modern alternative. Each pod features a comfortable double bed (with single bunks in some), power outlets, heating, and outdoor seating adjacent to wood-fired hot tubs or fire pits. Whether you’re relaxing after a day exploring the River Forth or unwinding beneath the starry sky, glamping offers a perfect blend of comfort and immersion in Scotland’s natural beauty.
