About Torrie Beat
Day and Syndicate options. Torrie fishing on the River Teith has not been readily available to all anglers before. This wonderful section of varied water on the Teith below Callander was previously part of the season ticket on Cambusmore Estates, Beat 5. It is now being managed by Naturally Wild Fishing, a group dedicated to providing quality affordable fishing whilst ensuring that protection of our natural resources is always a consideration. Torrie is a magnificent stretch of the river located outside of Callander on the true right bank.
Location
Torrie is a magnificent stretch of the river located outside of Callander on the true right bank opposite Cambusmore quarry. Leaving Callander along the A81, take the B8032 towards Deanston. Laybys are available for anglers to park in to access the beat.
Boundaries
The upper reaches of Torrie start where Torrie Burn enters the River Teith. The beat stretches downstream along the true right bank to the area opposite the Keltie Mouth.
The Fishing
Torrie consists of 5 named shallow and deep holding pools and several pocket-water runs. It is just over 1km in length and patrolled daily by the owners.
The upper reaches like Tinker's Stones and the Mackenzie/Island Streams are fast and varied, providing exciting fishing most suited to trout, sea trout and summer grilse fishing. These are ideal pools when fish are moving through but are also known to hold sea trout even in lower water and are accessed by a short walk through the trees.
Below this, the Chirrup and Baker's Run provide wonderfully long runs with good flow in nearly all conditions. Crow wood has many large boulders and can prove difficult to wade.
Keltie Mouth is a confluence pool and always a lovely pool to fish with salmon and sea trout holding as they rest from the rapids below, and consider their next move upstream left or right.
Access is easy to moderate, and cars can be parked in either of 2 laybys. The river is right by the road and is patrolled daily by the bailiff.
Walking to some of the pools is sometimes uneven but manageable by most anglers. Wading can be difficult but is not always needed especially when higher. If you are wading please note the rocks are very slippery so felt soles and a good wading stick are recommended.
The salmon fishing from spring to autumn can be very special indeed, however timing is everything. The beat needs water, and anything from 0.7 and dropping opens every pool up to fishing.
Sea trout in the early evening through to dark are generally visible, and like a fast moved dark fly.
Hatches on the Teith can be thick, and nymph fishing is rewarding in all conditions from Mid April onwards.
Facilities
Callander has many accommodation options. Doune, Dunblane and Callander offer shops and cafes, and excellent bakeries for a bite to eat. Nearest toilets are located in Callander or Deanston Distillery visitor centre. Two laybys offer parking for the beat. There's a fire pit and camp-like seating.
